Homemade Steak Sandwiches in the Crockpot

One of our family favorites for my Mom's Christmas Eve party is my homemade steak sandwiches in the crockpot using real steak.  By real steak I mean cutting up the steak from a london broil or other choice cut of steak.  I don't use the Steak-Ums or shaved beef for it.  This is a delicious was to have steak sandwiches, to it does take a little more work! You don't want to skip the step of marinading them tho, or the steak may get tough on you.

I do not have a picture of them done, but I do of the steaks.  Once they are done, the family often digs right in and I have not had the opportunity to take the picture.  I will have to be quick and update with a picture of them done one day soon.  Take note that I make a big batch of this as they do get gone quick and I have a big crockpot.  You can easily use less steak to make a smaller amount.  You can but do not have to halve the remaining ingredients if you make less.

What you will need for the steak sandwiches:

For the crockpot:

  • 2 steaks totaling about 3 lbs - I use london broil but you can use your preferred choice
  • 1 jar of au jus gravy or 2 small cans of campbells au jus gravy - we preferred the Heinz jar
  • 1 medium to large onion
  • 1 green pepper

The marinade:

  • 1/2 cup oil - vegetable or canola preferred
  • 1 and 1/4 cups water
  •  2 tsp - 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning - or combination Oregano, Parsley and Basil if no Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper - I like to use more pepper and add a peppercorn combination but black pepper will do
  • 2 tsp minced dried onion

I like to use a spice called Gobs of Garlic, but it is a specialty not sold in the supermarket so this is how I prepared the marinade when I was out of the Gobs of Garlic.

How to make the steak sandwiches:

First I slice the steaks into very thin slices going against the grain as much as possible.  Make sure to use one of your sharper knives for this.  Place the thin slices into a nice size glass or ceramic bowl.

Mix the marinade ingredients together and you can experiment by adding other spices if you like.  Pour the marinade over the sliced steak pieces and move the steak pieces around enough to make sure that they all get coated with the marinade.  Cover and put in the fridge for at least 20 minutes.

While the steak is marinading, chop or slice your onion and pepper.  We slice them into somewhat short slices, but some prefer to chop them.

Get your crockpot out and set up.  Once the steak has marinaded at least 20 minutes (it needs this to be tender) but no more then 24 hours, put the steak into the crockpot.  I do not actually drain the marinade off, but I do not dump it into the crockpot either.  Using a slotted spoon, I spoon the steak quickly from the bowl into the pot so some of the marinade will come into the pot but most will not.  Don't dump it in, just whatever comes with the steak while spooning it in.  Add your pepper and onion to the steak.  Then pour the au jus gravy over the steak mixture, stir lightly and cook on high for about 1-2 hours.  Then drop to low for about 4 hours.

Your homemade steak sandwiches are ready to serve with cheese if desired.  We do not even put sauce on ours when we assemble them, they turn out perfect the way they are for us! And I am one to get sauce on a steak sandwich when we get one out.
