Homemade Finger Paints That Are Edible

Hands and feet fun with homemade finger paint

Finger painting can be a lot of fun! Yeah it can be messy, but getting your fingers in paint and having fun can make a great family day.  I had heard of homemade finger painting and I remember somebody telling me that you can make it with cornstarch, water and sugar.  I made it usable and if you have cornstarch available, it will make enough to have some fun.  I think next time I am going to try flour, but this was a slightly sweet paint.  It was also 100% edible (tho it didn't taste the greatest.)  Being edible is great for young kids who like to put their fingers in their mouth.

This is how I made it:
about 3/4 cup cornstarch
3 tablespoons sugar
           Cupcake with homemade finger paint

2 cups water
food coloring for colors.

I mixed the cornstarch and sugar together in a pot.  Then I added the water and heated it on a low temperature.  Heat until it is hot, I didn't let it boil.  Then divide into bowls (we used 5 colors so we had 5 bowls), add desired food coloring and then let it cool.  I noticed that this works better if you take some of the water off of the top once it is cooled in the bowls and the water rises to the top.  But keep a little water to keep it from getting way too thick.  Cornstarch will cake up on the bottom if you let it.

That was it, we were ready to have a ball and get creative! My youngest had fun with her hands and feet, my older daughter had fun designing cupcakes.  This does seem to make a mess, but cornstarch comes right off with water.  Clean-up is not as bad as it looks like it will be :)

Enjoy!!
